Winter Advice from OWL

Posted on December 3rd, 2021

Wintry conditions can make many of us feel poorly.  Making healthier choices helps us to fend off winter bugs, and to fight infection if we do get ill. It is good to look out for friends and neighbours who may be vulnerable at this time of year and to take some simple steps to help us stay healthy and prepare for the really cold weather ahead.

  1. To help you stay well and know where to go for the right support and medical advice, Herts County Council and the NHS have produced a winter health guide.  It contains important advice on what you can do if you feel unwell and information on where to go for the wide variety of support and services on offer in Hertfordshire.  Visit www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/winterwellbeing
  2. Have the flu vaccine: it’s free to older people, those with serious medical conditions, carers and pregnant women. A nasal spray is offered to young children. Find out more at: www.nhs.uk/wintervaccinations
  3. Heat your home to at least 18C/65F, it can help minimise health risks.  If you can’t heat the whole house, heat the room you are in.
  4. If you have a car, keep it ‘winter ready’ with an emergency kit in the boot.
  5. Prevent falls: when outside, wear shoes with slip resistant soles.
  6. Stay active and connected – visit www.movingmore.co.uk to find an activity near you.  If your mobility is limited, chair exercises can help you stay warm and active.
  7. Eat a balanced diet and keep hydrated. Drink lots of water as well as warm drinks.
  8. Stock up your medicine cabinet and buy basics like tinned food in case you can’t get out of your home for a couple of days.
  9. Keep a list of useful contacts handy in case of emergencies.
  10. If you are worried about a friend, neighbour or relative who might be at risk this Winter, call HertsHelp on 0300 123 4044 for advice about available support, or email info@hertshelp.net
